5I like it so far!  Mar 19, 2010 By boyschool "Mrs. W"
I have to disagree with the previous review. When I bought this game 2 days ago, there were no reviews, so I took a chance. I have only played the first section, which I was able to solve after 2 nights. I'm not a "serious gamer" or anything. I have played Silent Hill on the wii and I hated it. I left a review of that game also. I like this game. The lead in messages are not overly long, and they serve to explain what the point is! I have had absolutely NO problem with the wii remote, drawers, doors or anything of the sort, so I can only assume the previous reviewer doesn't understand how to use it. When you come upon something that can be opened, the pointer symbol changes. Then, when you push the A button, a symbol appears telling you HOW to open it complete with little arrows! It will usually be either up and down, or left and right. This is in contradiction to how you opened things in Silent Hill, where you actually PULLED the wii remote toward you to open a drawer or door. It isn't faulty, it's just different, and you have to pay attention to this game, and not assume you are playing some other game. As for doors not opening when you want them to, if you read the hints at the beginning of the game, you are TOLD this will happen especially when a ghost is chasing you. You are also told what to do about it, you have to repeatedly SHAKE the door forcefully and it will finally open. I think this adds to the experience. After all, if you were running from a ghost, you might fumble with a door or two as well. I found the first portion of the game to be very fun, and I can't wait to play it again. It did take me a while to solve that part, and until you do solve it, you cannot move on, so that might cause the initial reviewers feeling of being "cramped", but it didn't bother me, it just meant I needed to keep searching until I completed it. Also I dont think the graphics are bad at all. And not all ghosts "flicker", as the game explains, some ghosts are more dangerous than others. I will add to my review after I have played the game more, but I am a mom with 3 kids and don't have time to play games often. I just wanted to say that this game is NOT horrible, and if you are looking for a spooky game that is not full of blood, guts, sex, and weapons, but is just creepy, spooky, and a good puzzle game, then you will like this.

3Nowhere near as horrible as the critics say but has significant issues. Much more enjoyable with a guide.  Apr 20, 2010 By Francis Sweeney "Frankie S"
Just beat this game and I have to say I enjoyed it quite a bit, despite significant problems.

First of all, if you want to beat this game and keep your frustration level low PLEASE use a walkthrough, I did and I have no shame. I primarily play these games to experience the story, not for frustration. This is the games biggest problem though, it is nearly impossible without a guide. There are very few clues as to what to do next and worse, SO many cabinets, drawers and rooms to explore that contain absolutely nothing. I think throughout the game there were maybe like three items hidden that I needed to find and the rest were out in the open. Problem is, unlike Silent Hill none of the items are glowing so mostly you are pointing and clicking hoping for a miracle. With a guide, no problem.

At one point, you must find a cushion to throw a phone down a laundry chute so you can call it and transport yourself to the basement. Why I couldn't wrap my phone in a jacket and drop it is beyond me. You must find bandaids and medical tape to wrap the phone without any location clues at all and the locations of both objects seem so random. Honestly, it would've taken hours to find those things in the hospital, even with a guide, they were tough to find.

There are also another annoyances to be had. In the first half of the game you can't store numbers, so if you forget, you're screwed. Whoever made that game design choice should be fired. Again, with a guide no problem.

One sequence where you have to fight off three ghosts and dial a number from memory (and the numbers erase everytime you get attacked..) is so frustrating I almost quit.

Environments are also really repetitive and dark even with maximum brightness on game and tv. It's hard to find a specific location without any landmarks or decent maps or if every door looks the same..

The graphics aren't great, not awful..but the ghost designs made me laugh at parts. None of the ghosts are very scary except for maybe one that will kill you immediately with her scissors.

Also the ghost phone calls you receive tend to get annoying, silly and the ghosts speak so slowly and you can't hang up.

Also, lots of loading times.

Ok done with my gripes. On the plus, I did jump a few times and the lack of blood and gore was refreshing. While the stupid internet chat text you have to read sucks, the spoken dialogue once you get through the first few chapters is actually not bad and I started to really like each character and found myself wanting to know how and why as the game unfolded.

The story is told from 4 points of view and unfolds nicely. Three out of four characters have decently developed stories (the young boys story seems to end abruptly, even though you learn his fate later, it wasn't really developed).

I really enjoyed the older woman's, Chiyo's, story of looking at the website to communicate with her dead husband. Playing as her isn't fun because she is the only character that can't run which I guess makes sense. But, once the story is revealed and why everyone is being pulled into this awful realm, her story ends with such a lovely and satisfying ending in which, I won't lie, I did shed a tear.

The game ends halfway through with an ending for the main girl, Rin that doesn't end very well. At this point you can play through new chapters as an investigator who crosses paths with Rin. You can replay chapters to reveal more story (I just couldn't..) or skip right to the new chapters. Interacting with her changes the ending in a significant way. Although the ending is similar to the first ending, the conclusion is much more powerful and satisfying and I felt like I understood why everything happened in the first place.

For me, the story was tight and I really enjoyed piecing it together with the diaries you find throughput the game. There are A LOT of j horror cliches, but I thought the story was satisfying and a bit different (I watch very little j horror so the cliches didn't bother me)

Also, I didn't have any control troubles in this game. Opening doors becomes second nature as you continue to play and I secretly like shaking the wii remote like a madman when I got attacked.

So overall, the game isn't spectacular but isn't awful by any means, with a lot of polish it could've been pretty fab. I enjoyed the story and characters more than the game itself. With a walkthrough, the game is a brisk and breezy 8 hours. Without one, the game is torture and you probably will give up before you get to the best parts of the story. So check it out if you like survival horror and a satisfying story but please use an online guide for your sanity.

I used a guide on gonintendo I believe. You should find it easily.

5Good, engaging game  May 06, 2010 By S. Baergen "Editor"
It was odd of me to buy a horror-survival game since I scare easily and am not that good at horror games. My initial thought after I began to play was, "How am I going to stand this?" I bought the game because of its connections to Japanese horror, and because I had the hope that I would be able to somehow use the game to practice Japanese. At first, I tried to see if I could get the Japanese version of the game, but I was reluctant to buy a Japanese version Wii and a Japanese copy of the game. I didn't believe my wallet could handle it. I decided to just order the English version, because it was still J-Horror. But I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that I could change the audio in the game to Japanese. The subtitles remain in English even when the audio is in Japanese, which is helpful. The player can also turn the subtitles off, however, if they find them distracting or want to have a challenge if they change the audio to Japanese.

As I progressed in the game I found it enjoyable, even though ghosts were constantly scaring and chasing me, and even though I haven't really got the mind for horror-survival. The characters are likeable, the story is good, and I even found myself being sympathetic to ghosts (even if they were attacking me). It is hard sometimes to find objects and clues, but there are lots of things to keep you entertained as you search. Most of them raise your heart rate a bit, but I know I enjoy it, even if I find myself jumping at the least little noise that occurs in the game, and outside).

The game arrived on time and intact, with no problems, and I continue to enjoy playing it. It depends on your expectations and experience whether or not you'll like this game, but I believe that all in all, it is a well-developed game. I feel the similarities to Japanese horror movies and other horror-survival games give a nice look into the horror genre. If you've seen horror movies or played other horror games, the ghost encounters can, I believe, be more fun than scary because sometimes you know what to expect. For me, the game was sometimes predictable, and sometimes not, which was a good thing. There are lots of hidden things to discover in the game, and there are spooky mini-events in the title screen, believe it or not. To increase the player's involvement in the game, there is even one ghost that "interacts" with you outside of the game; after seeing her while playing, the game sends messages to your Wii Inbox that you can look at if you want to.

Those who don't mind the similarities to Japanese horror films and games, and don't mind having to buckle down and search for clues and items will, I believe, enjoy interacting with the characters, ghosts, and even some inantimate objects (that are no longer inantimate in the ghostly realm of The Mnemonic Abyss).

5Love This Game!  Nov 25, 2011 By Happy Traveler ": )"
I'm 16 and this game has been frightening enough to make me think twice before closing my eyes to go to sleep. The door that leads to my bathroom is much like the sliding doors in this game, so it might be that fact that it seems I live in the game, but it is scary none the less. Many critics say that the game is bad because it runs through every Japanese horror idea known to us, but I find that that is why it is good. I don't normally like horror anything, but the ghost plus technology view is a great way to tie long time Japanese horror to modern day society. The way it goes from house to school to hospital, bouncing to different "worlds" yet having it tie all together makes everything unique. Also, I had one saved game while my best friend had a different one. We both played in different ways- I liked to look for everything in a room while I was in it, she was more go with the flow, which made us see different horror aspects in the game, which makes it new every time you play. Many times we had screamed at the top of our lungs because of something falling or we heard footsteps behind us in the game. I also like that when you're playing the game makes noises- such as breaking glass, something being thrown or footsteps when you're standing still. Also having the wii remote as your cell phone makes it even more frightening. I can't play this game in the dark anymore- and my brother watched me play before bed once and now it's given him nightmares. AWESOME GAME!

5A great horror title that beat my expectations  Jan 23, 2011 By amazonian
I was thrilled when I heard that the US would be getting "The Calling", because as we all know horror is a limited genre on the Wii. I'm also a great fan of Asian Horror. I did hold off awhile before buying to give the game a chance to drop in price.

There have been some comparisons to the Wii's release of Ju-on. The only similarities that I found between the 2 were the J-horror/ Asian horror influences. There were some slightly tedious things such as opening drawers/ cabinets with very little payoff. While at times slow on "action", the wonderful story line with great surprises more than made up for it. The game did take me a little while to become drawn in, but it soon did just that. As other great reviewers mentioned, I loved having the chance playing from different characters perspectives...though to be quite honest there was a trio of characters (and I guess the main character) that I would have enjoyed having an opportunity seeing experiences/controlling experiences through their perspectives.

The game wasn't challenging to the degree where there was frustration on my part, but there were some very clever puzzles and situations. Being a fan of Asian horror I loved the fact that I could listen in Japanese, while having subtitles. Please know you can skip that if you would rather have the characters speak in English. Another thing that I was grateful for is that there are plenty of opportunities to save your game. A big Thank You to the creators there.

Some cons for me were that often when searching for clues there would be Japanese writing in a place that seemed to me to be important (highlighted in white). I have zero idea if these were hints, etc. that just did not get translated, but personally I would have loved to have known what these said. Now when you are in the game and certain signs appear, you can point on them for translation, but this was not the case here. Another minor issue that I had, was that in some cut scenes of importance, the character you were playing would have written speech you would scroll through vs. spoken. It wasn't a major thing, but I found it irritating at times. Also, for me the replay value is not much, but I believe the length of the game more than makes up for that. There are some extra's though, and I won't give that away. If you decide on purchasing/ renting/playing "The Calling" and complete, please wait for the credits to complete vs. just shutting down (I don't want to give away the pleasant surprise ;) ) Some may find fending off the ghosts a bit of a nuisance (IMO very well done).

****Pos. Spoiler/ hint****

I'm going to try to be very vague here as I don't want to give away any spoilers (or at least to much), so just keep in mind that when you come across a certain lovely ghostly trio...the more distance that you can put between you, the better off that you will be. Also keeping your flashlight in the on position does the heart good ;).

****End hint/ pos. Spoiler****

Those of you looking for, or concerned with violence, gore, adult language this game stays away from those situations, yet does not detract from the overall creepiness/ etc. There are however some great little scares...startles to keep the horror / survival horror/ J-horror fan content.

If I was someone who had money to burn, I'd definitely purchase an Asian Wii, as there are some great games that just are not released in the US (like Fatal Frame cough cough). Until that time I will continue to devour those horror titles...as minimal as they are. (Hey developers/ Wii ...you have a market here that would love more!!!).

I'm quite a fan of replay value, and I just don't see myself playing this again anytime soon. Again that is a slight disappointment as the game easily had 30 hrs of game-play (which off the top of my head I can't think of another Wii horror that has that outside of RE4). Not only that, I found myself in the situation that a good book, or film places me in when nearing the end...I just did not want it to. You know it's good when you just can't put it down. "The Calling " is a great game, with an intriguing story. If you are a fan of J-Horror/ Asian Horror I believe you should at least rent this. You will find some similarities between aspects of the game, and some classic J-Horror /Asian Horror films. To those Wii owners looking for an interesting game, now is a perfect time to buy, as you will get some bang for you buck ;).
