Inexpensive, a LOT of fun and a LOT of replayability Aug 16, 2010
By Mark J. Fowler
"Let's Play Two!"
Okay - the Mrs. And I have about 7 or 8 Wii games, and we have had some degree of enjoyment from all of them, but "Chicken Riot" is one we go back to more often than Mario Go-Cart, Tiger Woods Golf, Lego Indiana Jones, Monopoly, Raving Rabbits, Winter Olympics or Family Game Show.
I've also got to tell you that I am not a hunter or gun fanatic, so I can't compare this to those available games where you go out and kill, I presume, simulated computer deer.
"Chicken Riot" is all cartoon "violence", and we thought it was fun right out of the box, but the thing that has surprised me is that it continues to be fun and we find out things about the game every time we play it. On a lazy afternoon when we're thinking "there's nothing on tv..." lately we've been likely to say "well, why don't we shoot some chickens!"
The game is billed as "hilarious", and I wouldn't go so far as to say THAT - although it is amusing. As I said, it's full of cartoon violence, and when you shoot the chickens, often they'll expire with a funny squawk.
You're basically turned loose in a series of eight escalating cartoon barnyards (one is actually a haunted house and the surrounding graveyard) where you're assaulted by an escalating series of malevolent leghorns. Each level has its own "super-chicken" villain based on a movie character - and they're kind of funny too. One level has chickens based on agents from the Matrix, another has "Robo-chickens" and the final "bad chicken" wears the uniform of the Dark Lord from Star Wars.
You can play it with the basic Wii controller, but our accuracy increases with the pistol attachment - the artwork on the game suggests the Wii zapper gun also.
The replayability we find in the game comes not only with escalating levels (by the end you're facing an egg-throwing army of bad-tempered chickens) but also from concentrating on different aspects playing the same levels over and over. For example - there are several "scores" assigned - the main point total comes not just from points assigned for different targets (in addition to shooting chickens, you can also shoot other routine items such as milk bottles and watermelons) but the point value is multiplied with each target not missed. If a chicken is worth 50 points - the next chicken in a row is worth 100, the third without a miss is 150 - so point values add up with NOT missing. BUT this way you pay a price trying to be so precise and not missing that you're likely to let a few targets go by without a shot - and the game ALSO tracks "percentage of chickens shot" in a given round. You also get extra points for the watermelons and "easter eggs" which are randomly scattered - there are 10 of these "golden eggs" per round. Possibly someone with more time and skill than myself could rack up both accuracy and getting ALL of the chickens, but for us right now - it is interesting to alternate concentrating on "let's not miss" with "let's get ALL the chickens" (with a high likelihood of missed shots as you rain down a Scorsese-like hail of bullets on your Rhode-Island Red enemy.)
We bought it because of the funny artwork and the fact that the price was <20 bucks. (We have less fun games upwards of 50.) We keep playing it because it's fun. It's not educational. It doesn't make you lose weight. But it's fun. For a game of this type, I can't recommend it more highly.

A high-falutten chicken-shootin' good time! Jun 08, 2010

The only reason I purchased this game was because the cover art looked nuts and it was cheap. I'm so happy I did. I've purchased many other much-hyped and expensive titles and not had as much fun as I continue to have fighting these chickens. I don't really know if the makers have the rights to these images - but you get to battle wizard chickens, terminator robot chickens, agent smith (aka the matrix) chickens, viking warrior chickens, alien spaceship chickens, Dracula chickens along with ghost zombie chickens, and finally the big Darth Chicken himself. I dare even the most seasoned gamer to survive levels 7 or 8 without getting "egged out!" The mini-games are equally as fun and challenging. There's no blood or gore - it's very funny, mild cartoon violence. Appropriate for any age. This one's a keeper!
