5A Precious Gem to be Treasured  May 16, 2008 By Crystalis Fan
I first played this game about 12 years ago, Did Not Regret it at all. You see, it was sitting in my fathers collection of NES games and i picked it up, knowing very little of what to expect from a game that was not vastly known at the time, It was one of my fathers favorite games, he would spend Hours at a time playing this game, and when i popped the cartridge into my NES, i soon figured out why. The Storyline was so expansive and invigorating that it consumed my life for at least 4 hours every day, Even then it was hard to step away from it, The game actually gave me a challenge, which most games at that time i was used to and knew what to expect from each one. This game was so ahead of its time that many people did not pick this up, which they should regret doing, The story Begins in a post Apocalyptic world when Technology destroyed most of the towns, villages and wildlife, which caused the earths axis to shift causing mutations in the creatures, You awaken in a cave from a cryogenic sleep, and are told that you must gather together 4 swords, Sword of Wind, Fire, Water, and Thunder, and then, only then can you Obtain the most Powerful and Valuable sword in the game, The sword of Crystalis. You Begin Your Journey in the Town of Leaf and Visit the Elder, who tells you that a great evil emperor named Draygon (Also known as Draygonia)has Built a Tower in the sky and has brought back the ways of Technology. Now in a world Where the ways of Magic Flourish, you must oppress the evil Draygon and Save Humanity. *Note: Play the NES Version, NOT The Game Boy Color Version, The NES VERSION is far more superior and provides more of a challenge, the GBC Version is not a true Port of the original, Just letting you know.*

5So much fun long ago, and still GREAT  Jan 08, 2009 By Aaron Patterson
I got this game from Santa as a Christmas present ages ago when I was a wee lad. I remember my dad and I played this game while my family watched around the TV. It was a once in a lifetime experience playing this game for the first time as a kid. I was very lucky to get such a great NES game, especially considering it's a more obscure lesser known title.

This game was so awesome. I still pick it up and play it again now that I'm in my mid twenties. The graphics are good for the NES. The music is good. The amount of weapons, magic, armor, items, and powerups you can get are amazing for an overhead RPG Adventure game from this era. And all the weapons and items are useful and placed well throughout the game to keep you from getting too powerful too fast. The controls are good, and the menus are easy to understand. Pacing and difficulty are just right.

I love the boss battles. They are all diverse and challenging. Your allies, the wise men, and the townspeople actually tell you useful information and the story is also interesting. I'm surprised at how little known this title is considering how great it is, especially for an NES game. But everyone I've talked to that does happen to know about this game loves it. If you are a fan of classic adventure games or RPG games, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. You won't be disappointed.

5Crystalis - The Definitive RPG Videogame  Jul 10, 2007 By baufe
*Crystalis - the one that started it all. This game was SO far ahead of its time when it was released in 1989. This game featured one of the most dynamic and expansive gameworlds ever created (for the time) with real-time action encounters with monsters and expansive landscapes with mountains, ice caverns, lava caves, deserts, riding on a dolphin on an ocean, underwater caverns, poisonous forest, etc. goodness knows what all else. The game is a true masterpiece and is so horribly underrated. It really is a shame. It was the first true rpg I ever played with the exception of Legend of Zelda, but this game holds a more special place in my heart than LoZ ever could. If you're familiar with SNES titles such as "Secret of Mana" or "Secret of Evermore", you will love this little NES treasure. It's still my favorite game of all-time.

5AMAZING GAME  Nov 07, 2011 By ORION295
This is an absolutely incredible game. I'm an avid collector of retro games and this is definitely one of the best ones I've ever played. It has an impressive story for it's time, a fair degree of challenge without getting too frustrating, and actually will keep you busy for a while. The game forces you to develop strategies for dealing with enemies. Throughout the game, you get different swords for different elements and certain swords only work against certain enemies. Most bosses are only weak against one type of attack. The game certainly features it's more frustrating elements. For example, almost every enemy in the game can hit you with some kind of status effect. From poison, to petrification, to paralysis and they all can get pretty frustrating. You do learn some spells in this game including one that cures status effects but you end up having to leave the dungeon and go back to the village to recover your magic so you can counteract the status effects all over again! It can form an endless cycle if you don't get good at dodging enemies. The key is to strike hard and fast. Also, there clearly were not enough buttons on the controller to support all the cool things you can do in this game. For instance, at times simply hitting the A button could activate your sword, one of your spells, or one of the many items you can collect in this game. The only way I know to fix this is to de-select the other items from your inventory. Not a terrible problem to have in a game and it's easy to fix but it will catch you off guard from time to time. Also, sometimes it can get easy to get stuck and not be able to progress because you missed some obscure item earlier on in the game and you can't beat the second to last boss in the game if you don't max up your level. Considering you only gain more health and magic at each level, this makes no sense whatsover, but hey what did you expect? Many old games were cryptic and this one is only cryptic in a couple of spots so I'll cut Crystalis a break. Replay value is high for me and being so cheap on Amazon it's a great buy for any avid NES collector or even the casual gamer. Don't miss out on this great game! It's definitely worth the money!

4Enjoyable old school  Apr 13, 2010 By M "CultOfStrawberry"
I can't say that Crystalis was the best game out there, but for a old NES game, it was solid. It was a different kind of RPG than the Final Fantasy series, with a unique storyline as you try to figure out what is going on in this world as well as who YOU are. Gameplay's fairly smooth, characters and story points are interesting, and the graphics are nice. Overall a enjoyable title for the NES.
