4Great game for non-traditional (older) gamers to play alone  Nov 22, 2010 By Paka Paka
I write this review not from the perspective of the traditional gamer (whatever that is) but from an older grad student who apparently has time for this and not her work! I loved to play Monopoly before I bought this video game so I was excited to see my pieces moving around. There are things I like and don't about this game.

I was hoping that I would be able to immediately play as my Mii but this feeling was rectified on many levels. First, you can't beat the original pieces, and now they're hilarious! For example, I chose that little terrier dog piece, thinking I would be given a little silver terrier that moves around the board. What I was given was a very stylish young woman, asymmetrical hairstyle, sunglasses, dangerously high heels, and then her little doggie is your terrier piece. The wheelbarrow is a barefoot country girl named Natalie who pushes the wheelbarrow. Each piece you select is accompanied by a person (each person has a name except for the terrier-woman who is just called "dog" in the Streets Monopoly board. I don't like that). You don't have access to all the pieces, you have to win money and unlock them. The funniest thing is, the Miis you have created for your Wii are the city folk who walk around town. I attend school far from home, so my Mii people are members of my family. My stylish woman was walking the dog around the corner of Free Parking and there was my sister, waiting to cross the street. A few minutes later, there's my mom walking down the sidewalk. Later, I found out that by winning games and thus earning money, you can "buy" your Mii so that you can play him or her in the game.

The graphics are pretty cool. When you build on a property, a nice house or hotel goes right up. Naturally the hotel that gets built on Baltic Avenue is nothing compared to the ones built on Park Place or Broadway! Cars and trucks drive by on the street. The Banker reminds me of Lenny Briscoe from Law & Order because he always has these one-liners. If you have never played before, he walks you through the whole game, explaining every little detail. There are a lot more boards you can play, but most of them are locked. It only makes me want to play more, earn more money and unlock those boards. I can't wait to see what they look like.

What I don't like is that it seems to be fast-moving, to the point where I think it may be buggy. Before I buy a property and especially before accepting or rejecting a trade, I like to get a bird's eye view of the board to see who owns what first. This is not possible. You may see the entire board before you roll your dice, but once you land on a property this feature is unavailable. Also, in the corner are all the cards/colors of the properties I own, but they are so darn small that I can barely make sense of them. It would be nice if there were a button to temporarily amplify this view. When I played my first game, I would periodically be led to a screen that displayed the players' net worth, but I the screen went by so fast I kept thinking, what was that? Then about 15 minutes into the game, Mr. Banker stops at that screen to explain it. Later when I declared bankruptcy and was taken back to that Net Worth scene, the screen just went black and stayed there until I pressed "2" to fast forward.

I've only played the game a couple of times. I haven't played online yet but I'm looking forward to it and will be sure to come back and update when I do. I love playing this game by myself with a cup of tea, curled up on the couch but playing online against a stranger seems fun!

UPDATE: Although the above description says that you can play online, this is not possible with the Wii. I've looked and looked for it in my game, until a comment by a reader led me to the EA.com page. Online play is only available with the PS3 and Xbox. Yes, I feel duped.

Another update: No mini-games either in the Wii version.

5Great Game!  Nov 14, 2010 By Alisha
This is a great game for all monopoly lovers! You can play the game by the basic monopoly rules, or play by picking new fun ways to play. (such as speed die-my personal favorite.- you have 3 dice and the 3rd has "Mr. Monopoly" and a Bus on it. Roll Mr Monopoly and you move to the next unowned proporty. Roll the Bus, pick where you want to land within the amount that the first two dice read. Roll triples and go anywhere on the board.) You can even create your own custom way/rules to play by. You play for monopoly money and as it builds up, you can unlock new boards, pawns, and the ability to play with your mii. And even though I have much of it unlocked, it never gets old because of the many different ways to play the game!!

4Nice twist on an old classic  Nov 26, 2010 By D. Manly
I rented this game first and played with friends on Thanksgiving, and everyone enjoyed it! So much so that I have to buy it now because there was plenty trash talking going on about a future rematch. :) There are several different versions of rules that you can play by, including the "official" rules and several games designed for speed play. You can also customize your own set of rules, though I haven't tested that feature myself. There is a system built in for trading & auctioning property, and there is no crooked banker in this game. :) I would recommend it as a fun "party" game. You probably would not play it much by yourself, but it is great when you have people over for dinner and want something fun to do. Strangely, you can only play with 4 people, a limitation that EA should have overcome if you ask me, but this is a minor annoyance. We had some people paired up as a team and it was fine.

5Great for Monopoly Lovers!  Nov 30, 2010 By WhidbeyKat
If you love to play Monopoly in any sense then this game is for you. I was on the fence about what video game version of Monopoly to buy and finally decided to get this one because it was the latest and greatest.

So far I have found a few different versions to play:

Monopoly Streets: You can choose your own rules or a set of predetermined ones. You get to see a 3D version of around the board. It is really cool to see each house be built on the property.

Traditional: The Monopoly board we all know and love.

As you gain more $M money you can unlock other boards: Ice, Cheese, Jungle, and others.

The only thing I didn't like was that ALL of the boards are set at regular Monopoly prices. As someone that has been playing "Here and Now" version for a few years now it took me a little while to get used to the traditional prices.

All in all, a great game! I have enjoyed playing with both my family and the computer. (And I don't think the computer cheats. :P ) I have managed to win on Easy, Medium, and Hard.

Tips to keep in mind:

You can skip the animations of the other players (and yourself0 moving around the board. This will speed the game up. You can also mute the "tips" or help so that you have to hear the same thing over and over again.

The only thing that I wish it had was Wi-Fi online play. I would love to be able to play with other players online.

4Fabulous idea; slightly sub-par implementation  Jan 02, 2011 By ilove25or6to4
As a life-long Monopoly fan (to the point where I'm programming my own PC implementation [not for profit... for fun!]), I had to ask Santa for this game as soon as I saw an ad for it on Youtube.

My first instinct after playing it once was to give it one star for having a massively unintuitive interface. But it turns out that reading the all-important warning at the beginning of the game is a good idea. HOLD THE WIIMOTE HORIZONTALLY, NOT VERTICALLY, WITH THE "1" and "2" BUTTONS ON THE RIGHT AND THE POWER BUTTON ON THE LEFT. After figuring this out the hard way like a moron, I boosted my rating to 3 stars immediately. Derp.

There are a number of pluses about this game, but the negatives are fairly severe. It'll be up to the user to decide to what extent said negatives impact their gaming experience. Also keep in mind that someone coding her own implementation has thought more about interface design and game play for Monopoly than the average Jane, so it's possible I'm a little harsher than I might otherwise be. Then again, the designers and coders at EA should be able to do a better job than an undergraduate computer science minor.

POSITIVES:

-The #1 benefit to this game is its creative visual twist on the classic board game. I'd actually envisioned it as a set of literal properties in the past, so it's really cool to see the game come to life. They did a good job with the animations, and it's fun to look at the game quite literally from a different angle.

-They included 6 or 7 different game scenarios. The classic Monopoly is there, of course, but you can also play other twists, such as having the endgame condition be "the first player to obtain two color groups wins" (my least favorite), or the scenario "all properties are improve-able and may be traded with houses/hotels on them... first player to double their worth wins." Some of them are pretty interesting.

-All of these game scenarios can be customized with several pages of menu options. You can even save a set of customized rules for future games. Worth a whole star in itself, in my opinion. Awesome!

-The menu and interface to mortgage, buy, and sell houses is a vast improvement over the click-heavy old one (in the other Wii Monopoly game). You can do it all with ease from one menu. Mad props to the EA folks for this huge improvement.

-The music creates a mood without being obnoxious or particularly noticeable.

-I see my family members' Miis walking around the streets. A very cute touch.

NEUTRAL:

-One of the other reviewers complained that you can't see the overall game board except after your turn. That is not entirely true. They don't mention it anywhere, but I serendipitously discovered that **if you hit the "A" button at the beginning of your turn, you can see the overall state of the board**. Granted, I wish they would have a small "overall state of the board" picture at the bottom of the screen, but I do think that it would be distracting from their cool animations. So I understand why they would make it something that you can only see every so often. But it's still a shortcoming that there are only certain times when you can see the whole board. It's hard to visualize and keep track of.

-Unlockable pieces, boards, and the ability to use Miis. That last one, I feel should be an option from the beginning. Fortunately I was able to unlock it after one game. Also, most of the boards are just repeats from the other Wii Monopoly game.

-Keeps track of your overall stats (such as number of jail terms and other fun trivia). Unfortunately, it makes no distinction from user to user. So it combines stats from all members of my family. Maybe my family is just competitive, but on games such as Wii Jeopardy and Wii Wheel of Fortune, we enjoy trying to outdo eachothers' stats!

NEGATIVES:

-The worst thing about this game, in my opinion, is the unbelievably annoying nature of the non-Mii playable characters, with whom you are stuck if you play by yourself. What was EA thinking on this one? Is there seriously anyone out there who finds this cute? They all speak in gibberish utterances with maniacal laughs, grunts, or "huh?"s. About the only person who says comprehensible words is the wheelbarrow farmer girl who will randomly say "Howdy howdy howdy" or a barely understandable "Eh, come on..." I admit that I'm starting to get numb to it, but... seriously? Whose bright idea was this? I'd consider docking almost an entire star for this. There's no way to turn just that off, either. It's indescribably obnoxious.

-Mr. Monopoly's comments are slightly less annoying than in the other Wii Monopoly, but apparently they've decided to trade "annoying" for "lame." Want some examples? Sometimes landing on a Chance/Chest will elicit a "Awwww, did someone send you a love note? *exaggerated kissing noises*" Or landing on a property will sometimes trigger the comment "This is a lot of land! Get it? Lot? Land?..." I still find myself shaking my head and wondering what the writers were smoking when I hear some of these things.

-The animations take forever. There is a "fast forward" button, but the constant need to use it sort of negates the primary "positive" about the game. Why couldn't they just make the animations shorter? I don't need to watch the woman playing the dog do a disco dance at the beginning of each turn. (A very minor example, but the point still stands.) It's unnecessary to stop at "Go" every time someone passes it, just so Mr. Monopoly can run over, say something stupid, hand over some money, leave, and then have the player do a little dance, and finally continue their move. Seriously.

-Largely because of the last bulletpoint, one game takes forever. You might want to have something handy to fill the times when you're not doing anything. Like Christmas thank you notes. Or margaritas. Or writing this review. All from experience...

SUMMARY:
Monopoly Streets will provide a fair amount of fun for a wide range of ages and other demographics, and particularly for fans of Monopoly. However, players will probably be annoyed by some of its idiosyncrasies and shortcomings.
